Manu Biosphere Reserve was recognized by UNESCO in 1977 in an extension of approximately 1 million 800 thousand hectares. The local people all understand the important role they play as a role model in conservation and development and they are requesting an extension of the territory to more than 6 million hectares. This would include the Amarkaeri Communal Reserve as a naturally protected area giving it a more important direct role.
Amarakaeri was declared a reserved zone in August 2000. This land within the reserve contained a rich biodiversity of animals with some species being in danger of extinction.
